The fragmented nature of scam prevention efforts—with different organizations, jurisdictions, and sectors working in isolation—has allowed scammers to exploit gaps and evade accountability. Amazon joined as an inaugural member of the Aspen Institute’s National Task Force on Fraud and Scam Prevention to help change this reality. Working alongside national organizations such as AARP, major banks, and other technology firms, the Task Force developed and proposed the first unified national strategy addressing the impact of $158 billion in annual fraud and scams in the United States.
As the Aspen Institute Financial Security Program, the Task Force’s convener, notes in their “United We Stand” report: “The purpose of the Task Force was to bring together parties with an interest in protecting consumers and restoring trust in our systems. It is the first time such a broad collection of leaders from government, law enforcement, private industry, and civil society have come together in the United States to help develop a strategy aimed at preventing fraud and scams.”
